Stop school shooting, America needs strong gun laws
According to Everytown for Gun Safety, a gun control advocacy group, there have been at least 306 school shootings in the United States since 2013. This means there have been, on average, one school shooting a week for the past five years.
These shootings have affected students of all ages. On February 14, 2018, a 19-year-old gunman killed 17 students and staff members at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. This was the deadliest school shooting in five years.
Since the Parkland shooting, survivors have been calling for stronger gun laws. They are lobbying for a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and they are calling for mandatory background checks on all gun sales.
So far, these efforts have been unsuccessful. The Republican-controlled Congress has refused to pass any gun legislation, and the Trump administration has withdrawn its support for a ban on assault weapons.
But the survivors of the Parkland shooting are not giving up. They are planning a march on Washington on March 24 to demand action from Congress.
The students are right to demand change. America does need strong gun laws. The current laws allow too many people to obtain guns without a background check. This makes it easy for dangerous people, such as the Parkland shooter, to obtain weapons.
However, the students should not exclude people from their march just because they disagree with their views on guns. The march should be a inclusive event that brings together people of all political stripes to demand change from Congress.
It is evident that America needs to change their gun laws in order to prevent any more school shootings from happening. If these laws are not put into place, more innocent lives will be lost.
